Data Exposure Grid

The Comptroller’s office recently identified the exposure of three data files that contained individuals’ personal identifying information. The Employees Retirement System (ERS) data file had information on about 281,000 names, the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) data file had about 1.2 million names, and the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) file had about 2 million names. The Data Exposure Grid shows who could be affected.

ACTIVE CONTRIBUTING MEMBERS
  • those who are currently working for TRS-covered employers and are contributing to the TRS retirement plan; TRS Employees
ACTIVE NON-CONTRIBUTING MEMBERS
  • those who have at least five years of service credit and are not currently employed in a TRS-covered position, or
  • those who have less than five years of service credit, are not currently employed in a TRS-covered position, and have been absent from TRS service for less than five years.
INACTIVE MEMBERS:
  • those who have less than five years of service credit and who terminated employment in a TRS-covered position more than five years ago.
ANNUITANTS:
  • those who are receiving retirement benefits.

All individuals meeting criteria of "who could be affected" up to January 2010
ERS (Employees Retirement System of Texas) 281,000 (approx.) CONTRIBUTING MEMBERS:
  • working state employees making contributions to the system.
NON-CONTRIBUTING MEMBERS:
  • those who have left state employment and are no longer contributing to ERS, but still have accounts.
RETIREES:
  • any living state retiree receiving a benefit.
